Richard Southgate’s elaborate canal system and fishing retreat certainly qualifies as one of the most unique Manitowish Waters historic stories.  Join the Manitowish Waters Historical Society for a presentation at MW Town Hall regarding some of the most eccentric early summer residents.  The Lac Du Flambeau Railroad Depot near Headflyer and White Sand Lakes allowed Southgate and guests access to a series of canals leading to his exclusive estate on the northern shore of Little Trout Lake.   The canal continued to Alder Lake providing Southgate’s community (Bob Town) access to even more fishing and social gatherings at Buck’s, Deer Park  and Voss’ resorts.  This flamboyant story has a tragic ending that should not to be missed.
