Frances Badger (1903-1997), artist and muralist, spent her childhood between Kenilworth, Illinois and Big Lake in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin.  In 1908, at the age of four, Frances first arrived in an area of old growth timber and wonderful log cabins at the newly acquired family estate on the shores of Big Lake. There were no roads leading to this summer retreat so after riding overnight on the Chicago Northwestern Railroad to Manitowish. The family traveled by buckboard to the Rest Lake Dam and then traveled by water through several lakes and then made their portage between Clear and Big Lake.  Once there they met boats and traveled across Big Lake to the estate. The property was named “The Tamaracks” and later it was changed to “Keego”.  The Northwoods of Wisconsin inspired Frances Badger as she began her lifelong journey as an artist.  Learn how the Manitowish Waters Historical Society discovered her story and some important paintings that were created from memories of her childhood on Big Lake and along historic Rice Creek.
