SUMMARY:Camp Mercer Historical and Interpretive Hike and Taphouse Visit
DESCRIPTION:Explore with Manitowish Waters Historical Society guide Jim Bokern and a North Lakeland Discovery Center naturalist one of the most robust Civilian Conservation Corps camps in the Northwoods while walking on the newest Northern Highland American Legion State Forest hiking trail! We will follow 23 interpretive signs\, visit cleared archaeological features and discuss years of research while traveling along the Manitowish River. Discover a variety of Northwoods ecologies and the impact of the CCC on protecting natural resources. Importantly\, two earlier river-drive era logging camps are also present on the Camp Mercer campus. This will be a moderately challenging 2-3 mile hike due to uneven terrain. Following the hike\, there is an option to join the team at Liberty Way Taphouse to continue the historic conversation to celebrate Camp Mercer.\n\n\n\nRestrooms are available at the meeting location. Registered participants will receive an email with more information prior to the hike. John Dillinger and his gang were not only at Little Bohemia but made themselves known to several families as they were trying to escape the FBI trap. DESCRIPTION:Big Lake is not only scenic\, it has an interesting murder mystery in its history. The 1920s brought people from diverse walks of life. There were several summer estates\, and some small cabins for summer rentals. Those who lived year-round on the lake were caretakers for the wealthy estates\, hunting and fishing guides\, trappers\, and some were moonshiners. One winter night\, guide and moonshiner\, Mr. Powers\, was killed. Was it murder? Was it self-defense? Join Kay Krans\, retired history teacher and Manitowish Waters Historical Society (MWHS) member along with a Discovery Center Naturalist as we tour by pontoon\, the important sites of this story. \nLimited space available. Registration is required by 8/15/2026. $60/Non-Member and $55/Member (NLDC or MWHS). Registered participants will receive an email with trip information and boat landing location. SUMMARY:Travel the Trails Through Time: Historical and Naturalist Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:Come on a guided interpretive bike ride through the towns of Manitowish and Mercer! Jim Bokern of the Manitowish Waters Historical Society and Hannah Thorpe\, NLDC Naturalist\, will lead you along the paved bike trail and discuss some interesting history and natural history of the area that includes moonshining\, river ecology\, logging and railroad days\, Native American portages\, unique habitats\, and much more! We’ll stop at establishments in Mercer and learn about their past and present. The trip is about 15 miles total on a mostly flat\, paved trail. We may occasionally bike on gravel roads for short distances. \nParticipants must bring their own bike\, or reserve a bike with River’s Edge Adventure Company. Registered participants will receive an email with more information prior to the trip. Space is limited and registration is required by 8/24/2026. DESCRIPTION:Learn about Manitowish Waters’ history and visit some local establishments as we hike at a leisurely pace on area trails. Using tour guide headsets\, participants can easily hear and learn from Manitowish Waters Historical Society and North Lakeland Discovery Center guides. Trail discussions will include geology\, nature\, prehistoric times\, Ojibwa culture\, logging\, early resorts\, guides\, Rest Lake Ranger station\, and more. We will stop into several bars/restaurants for refreshments and amazing stories about our town’s past\, so please bring cash for beverages. SUMMARY:Forest History Driving Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we journey from eastern Iron County to the ancient forests surrounding Star Lake\, discovering both historic and contemporary forestry sites in the Northern Highland American Legion Forest. By the late 19th century\, Wisconsin’s leaders aimed to establish a state park or forest reserve across Iron\, Vilas\, Oneida\, and Forest counties to benefit future generations. Along the way\, we’ll visit several significant sites\, including ranger stations\, watchtowers\, Civilian Conservation Corps camps\, state nurseries\, ranger cabins\, historic logging sites\, and areas affected by forest fires. Additionally\, we’ll explore Youth Conservation Corps camps and more. We will also delve into modern forestry practices\, showcasing Wisconsin’s ongoing commitment to sustainable forest management. \nParticipants need to bring a lunch\, water\, and shoes suitable for short hikes on uneven ground. Some paths may have fallen logs to step over. Hiking will be moderate to light. \nSpace is limited\, so please register early; $45 ($30 for members of the NLDC or MWHS).
