DESCRIPTION:Learn what John Dillinger and his gang were really like and the “behind the scenes” story of their weekend in Manitowish Waters as we travel by pontoon to historic Dillinger sites. Enjoy a box lunch and tour the grounds of the famous Little Bohemia Lodge\, the property that was featured in the movie Public Enemies. The tour is led by Manitowish Waters Historical Society (MWHS) member\, Kay Krans. Lunch cost is included in the registration fee. \nAn email will be sent to registered participants with directions to the launch site and items to bring prior to the trip.  Participants will also be contacted in advance to choose their lunch option. Lunch will be held 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM for both morning and afternoon sessions of the tour.  Please note Little Bohemia is not open when the morning tour departs so there is no available restroom facility onsite.  You may wish to consider stopping at a public facility on your way to the landing!   \nRegistration is required by 8/19/26.  $75/Non-Member and $65/Member (NLDC or MWHS).  PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT LITTLE BOHEMIA TO REGISTER. There were several summer estates and some small cabins for summer rentals. Those who lived year-round on the lake were caretakers for the wealthy estates\, hunting and fishing guides\, trappers\, and some were moonshiners. One winter night\, guide and moonshiner\, Mr. Powers\, was killed. Was it murder? Was it self-defense? Join Kay Krans\, retired history teacher and Manitowish Waters Historical Society member\, along with a Discovery Center Naturalist as we tour by pontoon the important sites of this story. \nLimited space available. Hear the story about the kidnapping of Minneapolis mob boss Leon Gleckman and the place the kidnappers hid him. Ralph Capone has a Manitowish Waters story as well. John Dillinger and his gang were not only at Little Bohemia but made themselves known to several families as they were trying to escape the FBI trap. \nEach tour offers a mix of local history and beautiful lake views. \n\nMorning Tour: 9:00am – 11:30am\nAfternoon Tour: 12:00pm – 3:00pm\n\nThe meeting location is Rest Lake. SUMMARY:Camp Mercer Historical and Interpretive Hike and Taphouse Visit
DESCRIPTION:Explore with Manitowish Waters Historical Society guide Jim Bokern and a North Lakeland Discovery Center naturalist one of the most robust Civilian Conservation Corps camps in the Northwoods while walking on the newest Northern Highland American Legion State Forest hiking trail! We will follow 23 interpretive signs\, visit cleared archaeological features and discuss years of research while traveling along the Manitowish River. Discover a variety of Northwoods ecologies and the impact of the CCC on protecting natural resources. Importantly\, two earlier river-drive era logging camps are also present on the Camp Mercer campus. This will be a moderately challenging 2-3 mile hike due to uneven terrain. Following the hike\, there is an option to join the team at Liberty Way Taphouse to continue the historic conversation to celebrate Camp Mercer.\n\n\n\nRestrooms are available at the meeting location. Registered participants will receive an email with more information prior to the hike. Trail discussions will include geology\, nature\, prehistoric times\, Ojibwa culture\, logging\, early resorts\, guides\, Rest Lake Ranger station\, and more. We will stop into several bars/restaurants for refreshments and amazing stories about our town’s past\, so please bring cash for beverages.
