SUMMARY:Discovering Wisconsin's Amazing Forestry Legacy: Driving Tour & Short Hikes
DESCRIPTION:Join Manitowish Waters Historical Society’s Jim Bokern as we travel from eastern Iron County to the old growth forest surrounding Star Lake to explore both historic and modern forestry sites surrounding the Northern Highland American Legion Forest. By the late 19th century\, Wisconsin’s leaders wished to create a state park or forest reserve in Iron\, Vilas\, Oneida and Forest counties to serve generations of residents and visitors. During our travels\, we will visit several early sites\, including ranger stations\, watch towers\, Civilian Conservation Corps camps\, state nurseries\, a ranger cabin\, forest fires\, Youth Conservation Corps camps and more. Some historic logging sites will be viewed as well. Importantly\, we will also explore modern forest practices that illustrate the long-term commitment to sustainable forests in Wisconsin. \nParticipants need to bring a lunch\, water and shoes suitable for short hikes on uneven ground. Some paths may have fallen logs to step over. Hiking will be moderate to light.  Registered participants will be emailed more information on driving tour logistics. DESCRIPTION:Come on a guided interpretive bike ride through the towns of Manitowish and Mercer! Jim Bokern of the Manitowish Waters Historical Society and Hannah Thorpe\, North Lakeland Discovery Center Naturalist\, will lead you along the paved bike trail and discuss some interesting history and natural history of the area that includes moonshining\, river ecology\, logging and railroad days\, Native American portages\, unique habitats\, and much more! We’ll stop at establishments in Mercer and learn about their past and present. The trip is about 15 miles total on a mostly flat\, paved trail. We may occasionally bike on gravel roads for short distances. \nParticipants must bring their own bike\, or reserve a bike with River’s Edge Adventure Company. One winter night\, guide and moonshiner\, Mr. Powers\, was killed. Was it murder? Was it self-defense? You will learn how local citizens got involved in the liquor trade and were able to supply bootleg alcohol to Chicago and Minneapolis. Hear the story about the kidnapping of Minneapolis mob boss Leon Gleckman and the place the kidnappers hid him. Ralph Capone has a Manitowish Waters story as well. John Dillinger and his gang were not only at Little Bohemia but made themselves known to several families as they were trying to escape the FBI trap. \nEach tour offers a mix of local history and beautiful lake views. \n\nMorning Tour: 9:00am – 11:30am\nAfternoon Tour: 12:00pm – 3:00pm\n\nThe meeting location is Rest Lake. DESCRIPTION:Explore with Manitowish Waters Historical Society guide Jim Bokern and a North Lakeland Discovery Center naturalist one of the most robust Civilian Conservation Corps camps in the Northwoods while walking on the newest Northern Highland American Legion State Forest hiking trail! We will follow 23 interpretive signs\, visit cleared archaeological features and discuss years of research while traveling along the Manitowish River. Discover a variety of Northwoods ecologies and the impact of the CCC on protecting natural resources. Importantly\, two earlier river-drive era logging camps are also present on the Camp Mercer campus. This will be a moderately challenging 2-3 mile hike due to uneven terrain. Following the hike\, there is an option to join the team at Liberty Way Taphouse to continue the historic conversation to celebrate Camp Mercer.\n\n\n\nRestrooms are available at the meeting location. Join local historian Kay Krans and NLDC Naturalist Licia for an evening pontoon tour of Manitowish Lake. Our tour will delve into the history\, legends and myths\, and the ecology of this important lake. This tour includes a delicious dessert and coffee on the deck at Blue Bayou Inn. \nSpace is limited\, so be sure to sign up early! The cost is $60 ($55 for members of the MWHS or NLDC).
