SUMMARY:Travel the Trails Through Time: Historical and Naturalist Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:Come on a guided interpretive bike ride through the towns of Manitowish and Mercer! Jim Bokern of the Manitowish Waters Historical Society and Hannah Thorpe\, North Lakeland Discovery Center Naturalist\, will lead you along the paved bike trail and discuss some interesting history and natural history of the area that includes moonshining\, river ecology\, logging and railroad days\, Native American portages\, unique habitats\, and much more! We’ll stop at establishments in Mercer and learn about their past and present. The trip is about 15 miles total on a mostly flat\, paved trail. We may occasionally bike on gravel roads for short distances. \nParticipants must bring their own bike\, or reserve a bike with River’s Edge Adventure Company. Registered participants will receive an email with more information prior to the trip. Space is limited and registration is required by 8/24/2026. $35/Non-Member and $25/Member NLDC or MWHS. SUMMARY:Manitowish Waters Historic Hike and Pub Crawl #2
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Manitowish Waters’ history and visit some local establishments as we hike at a leisurely pace on area trails. Using tour guide headsets\, participants can easily hear and learn from Manitowish Waters Historical Society and North Lakeland Discovery Center guides. Trail discussions will include geology\, nature\, prehistoric times\, Ojibwa culture\, logging\, early resorts\, guides\, Rest Lake Ranger station\, and more. We will stop into several bars/restaurants for refreshments and hear amazing stories about our town’s past\, so please bring cash for beverages. The route is 3.5 miles and mostly along existing trails\, and a shuttle is included. \nSpace is limited\, so please register early (registration deadline is 8/26/2026); $35/Non-Member and $25/Member (NLDC or MWHS).  Participants will receive an email prior to the event with more information. DESCRIPTION:Learn what John Dillinger and his gang were really like and the “behind the scenes” story of their weekend in Manitowish Waters as we travel by pontoon to historic Dillinger sites. Enjoy a box lunch and tour the grounds of the famous Little Bohemia Lodge\, the property that was featured in the movie Public Enemies. The tour is led by Manitowish Waters Historical Society member\, Kay Krans. Lunch cost is included in the registration fee. \nAn email will be sent to registered participants with directions to the launch site and items to bring prior to the trip.  Participants will also be contacted in advance to choose their lunch option. Lunch will be held 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM for both morning and afternoon sessions of the tour.  Please note Little Bohemia is not open when the morning tour departs so there is no available restroom facility onsite.  You may wish to consider stopping at a public facility on your way to the landing!   \nRegistration is required by 9/6/26.  $75/Non-Member and $65/Member (NLDC or MWHS).  PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT LITTLE BOHEMIA TO REGISTER. DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about Northwoods artisans.  During the Great Depression\, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration developed a domestic program of recovery called the New Deal.  A series of agencies was created to help people find employment and bring economic relief to Americans.  Two artists\, Frances Badger and Marie Bleck\, spent many years immersed in the beauty of the Northwoods of Wisconsin.  They both became accomplished artists who were employed by the Works Progress Administration and the Federal Arts Project.  They were two of 5\,000 artists who produced incredible art during the Great Depression.  Join local historian Kay Krans of the Manitowish Waters Historical Society for a presentation about these two incredible women who shared the beauty of Northern Wisconsin through their painting\, poetry\, and printmaking.\n\nNo registration is required to attend this event.\n\n\nWednesday\, September 9\, 2026:\nWhite Oak Grill\, 13029 Deer Park Rd\, Manitowish Waters\, WI\n4:00PM – Cash bar opens\n4:15PM – Appetizers hosted by White Oak Grill\n5:00PM – 6:15PM – Free presentation by Kay Krans\, Manitowish Waters Historical Society\n6:30PM – Stay for dinner after the program. SUMMARY:Discovering Wisconsin's Amazing Forestry Legacy: Driving Tour & Short Hikes
DESCRIPTION:Join Manitowish Waters Historical Society’s Jim Bokern as we travel from eastern Iron County to the old growth forest surrounding Star Lake to explore both historic and modern forestry sites surrounding the Northern Highland American Legion Forest. By the late 19th century\, Wisconsin’s leaders wished to create a state park or forest reserve in Iron\, Vilas\, Oneida and Forest counties to serve generations of residents and visitors. During our travels\, we will visit several early sites\, including ranger stations\, watch towers\, Civilian Conservation Corps camps\, state nurseries\, a ranger cabin\, forest fires\, Youth Conservation Corps camps and more. Some historic logging sites will be viewed as well. Importantly\, we will also explore modern forest practices that illustrate the long-term commitment to sustainable forests in Wisconsin. \nParticipants need to bring a lunch\, water and shoes suitable for short hikes on uneven ground. Some paths may have fallen logs to step over. Hiking will be moderate to light.  Registered participants will be emailed more information on driving tour logistics.
