We’ll also visit several local spots for refreshments and fascinating stories about the town’s past. DESCRIPTION:Join Manitowish Waters Historical Society (MWHS) member Kay Krans on a two-hour pontoon tour of Manitowish and Little Star lakes\, departing from the Blue Bayou Inn. Discover the indigenous community’s cultural networks\, logging camps\, railroad landing\, early resorts\, Ojibwa village\, unique residents\, and Dillinger’s gang. Participants will view many unique historic sites and supplemental historic images and documents. Directions to the launch site will be sent prior to the trip. \n\nRegistration required by 6/18/25. $60/Non-Member and $55/Members of the DC or MWHS.  Participants will meet at the Blue Bayou Inn. There are no restroom facilities at the launch site. SUMMARY:Our Civilian Conservation Corps Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Discover the amazing legacies of Northwoods Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps located along the Manitowish River and White Sand and Star lakes. Join Jim Bokern from the Manitowish Waters Historical Society at the Boulder Beer Bar as we celebrate our CCC heritage on Tuesday\, November 26. \nDuring the Great Depression\, thousands of men lived in Northwoods CCC camps\, completing environmental reclamation projects and supporting their families with most of their wages. This unique presentation chronicles Camp Mercer\, Camp Crystal Lake and Camp Star Lake with pictures\, maps and documents.  The presentation kicks off at 6 pm. \nAs a special treat\, the Boulder Beer Bar has one of the last 1/6 barrels of Camp Mercer 660 limited edition beer from Lake Louie brewmaster Kirby Nelson. Camp 660 beer will be tapped at 4 pm and will go fast! Finally\, the chefs at Boulder Beer Bar will create a few CCC entrees from a 1933 Kellogg CCC cookbook for folks to order. Historic food\, drink and stories from 90 years ago will provide for a lively evening.

SUMMARY:Forest History Driving Tour
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm \nJoin us as we travel from eastern Iron County to the old growth forest surrounding Star Lake to explore both historic and modern forestry sites surrounding the Northern Highland American Legion Forest. By the late 19th century\, Wisconsin’s leaders wished to create a state park or forest reserve in Iron\, Vilas\, Oneida and Forest counties to serve generations of residents and visitors. During our travels\, we will visit several early sites\, including ranger stations\, watch towers\, Civilian Conservation Corps camps\, state nurseries\, a ranger cabin\, forest fires\, Youth Conservation Corps camps and more. Some historic logging sites will be viewed as well. Importantly\, we will also explore modern forest practices that illustrate the long-term commitment to sustainable forests in Wisconsin. \nParticipants need to bring a lunch\, water and shoes suitable for short hikes on uneven ground. Some paths may have fallen logs to step over. Hiking will be moderate to light. \nSpace is limited\, so please register early; $45 ($30 for members of the NLDC or MWHS). One winter night\, guide and moonshiner\, Mr. Powers\, was killed. Was it murder? Was it self-defense? Join Kay Krans\, Manitowish Waters Historical Society historian\, along with a Discovery Center naturalist\, as we tour the important sites of this story by pontoon. With 23 interpretive signs and cleared archaeological features\, years of research will be discussed while traveling along the Manitowish River. We will discover a variety of the Northwoods’ ecologies and the impact of the CCC on protecting natural resources. Importantly\, two earlier river drive era logging camps are also present on the Camp Mercer campus.
