SUMMARY:Manitowish Waters Historic Hike and Pub Crawl #2
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Manitowish Waters’ history and visit some local establishments as we hike at a leisurely pace on area trails. Using tour guide headsets\, participants can easily hear and learn from Manitowish Waters Historical Society and North Lakeland Discovery Center guides. Trail discussions will include geology\, nature\, prehistoric times\, Ojibwa culture\, logging\, early resorts\, guides\, Rest Lake Ranger station\, and more. We will stop into several bars/restaurants for refreshments and amazing stories about our town’s past\, so please bring cash for beverages. The route is 3.5 miles and mostly along existing trails\, and a shuttle is included. \nSpace is limited\, so please register early (registration deadline is 8/26/2026); $25/Non-Member and $20/Member (NLDC or MWHS).  Register online at the North Lakeland Discovery Center (www.discoverycenter.net) or contact the NLDC at 715-543-2085.  Participants will receive an email prior to the event with more information. Registration does not include drinks or purchases from pubs along the trail.  Thursday 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM.

DESCRIPTION:Learn what John Dillinger and his gang were really like and the “behind the scenes” story of their weekend in Manitowish Waters as we travel by pontoon to historic Dillinger sites. Enjoy a box lunch and tour the grounds of the famous Little Bohemia Lodge\, the property that was featured in the movie Public Enemies. The tour is led by Manitowish Waters Historical Society (MWHS) member\, Kay Krans. Lunch cost is included in the registration fee. \nAn email will be sent to registered participants with directions to the launch site and items to bring prior to the trip.  Participants will also be contacted in advance to choose their lunch option. SUMMARY:Forest History Driving Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we journey from eastern Iron County to the ancient forests surrounding Star Lake\, discovering both historic and contemporary forestry sites in the Northern Highland American Legion Forest. By the late 19th century\, Wisconsin’s leaders aimed to establish a state park or forest reserve across Iron\, Vilas\, Oneida\, and Forest counties to benefit future generations. Along the way\, we’ll visit several significant sites\, including ranger stations\, watchtowers\, Civilian Conservation Corps camps\, state nurseries\, ranger cabins\, historic logging sites\, and areas affected by forest fires. Additionally\, we’ll explore Youth Conservation Corps camps and more. We will also delve into modern forestry practices\, showcasing Wisconsin’s ongoing commitment to sustainable forest management. \nParticipants need to bring a lunch\, water\, and shoes suitable for short hikes on uneven ground. Some paths may have fallen logs to step over. Hiking will be moderate to light. \nSpace is limited\, so please register early; $45 ($30 for members of the NLDC or MWHS). DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder what the Manitowish Chain of Lakes looked like before the dam and decades of river drive logging? If so\, you are in luck\, because the Manitowish Waters Historical Society will  deliver pre-dam\, historic re-creations\, using journals\, maps\, reports\, and photos that reveal the early contours of our shores.
