SUMMARY:Big Lake Investigation by Pontoon
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday: 9 am – 12:30 \nBig Lake is a scenic lake that has an interesting murder mystery in its history. The 1920s brought people from diverse walks of life to the area. There were several summer estates and some small cabins for summer rentals. Those who lived year-round on the lake were caretakers for the wealthy estates\, hunting and fishing guides\, trappers\, and some moonshiners. One winter night\, guide and moonshiner\, Mr. Powers\, was killed. Was it murder? Was it self-defense? Join Kay Krans\, Manitowish Waters Historical Society historian\, along with a Discovery Center naturalist\, as we tour the important sites of this story by pontoon. Pack binoculars\, water\, snacks\, bug repellent\, sunscreen and a lunch. \nSpace is limited\, so please register early; $60 ($55 members of the NLDC or MWHS). Register at the North Lakeland Discovery Center (www.discoverycenter.net). For more information\, contact the NLDC (715-543-2085 or at contact@discoverycenter.net).

SUMMARY:Northwoods Through Time Series\, Youth Conservation Corps Program
DESCRIPTION:The 1960s was a decade of the Environmental Movement\, and Gaylord Nelson was a champion of environmental activism in Wisconsin as well as the nation. He was the founder of Earth Day. The Wisconsin Youth Conservation Corps was created through his inspiration and guidance as governor of Wisconsin from 1959-1963 and U.S senator from our state from 1963-1981. He created legislation through the Outdoor Recreation Act Program ($50 million) of 1961 that allowed Wisconsin to acquire over one million acres of land for recreation and preservation\, and created the Wisconsin Youth Conservation Corps. Nelson supported the idea of the YCC as a summer program modeled after the Civil Conservation Corps legacy. It was designed for young men ages 16-18 to work on conservation projects in Wisconsin. Statehouse Lake became the first camp in Wisconsin\, which today is the site of the North Lakeland Discovery Center. The camp was in service to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for about 30 years. Join Kay Krans as she tells you the stories of the camp and some of the young men and women whose lives were changed by their experience in Manitowish Waters and their service to the State of Wisconsin.

SUMMARY:History of Rest Lake Dam
DESCRIPTION:Imagine the Manitowish Waters chain of lakes 16.5 feet higher than today’s summer water levels! That was the original plan created by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1878. \nJoin us at 1 p.m. on Wednesday\, May 29st at the MAC and discover how the river drive logging era and Rest Lake Dam became the anchor for Manitowish Waters. Learn about pre-dam conditions along the chain and how logging drives modified the lakes\, streams and shorelines. Today\, Rest Lake Dam has a unique operating order\, which started in 1914 through a grassroots effort to protect riparian property. Over time\, Rest Lake Dam has taken many forms\, and its operations have been legally challenged four times. \nLocal historian Jim Bokern will share new photos\, historic maps\, documents\, research and stories that are guaranteed to deliver new and exciting historic insights and\, perhaps\, a better understanding of how the dam operates today.

SUMMARY:Win-Mar/Pea Patch Centennial
DESCRIPTION:Join the Manitowish Waters Historical Society Zoom presentation and celebrate 100 years of amazing service and fun at the Win-Mar or Pea Patch. Explore the 1888 building of the Rest Lake Dam as well as the Mississippi River Logging Company camp\, which established the first MW commercial operation in 1889.  Learn how Winne Johnson Young\, daughter of Walcott Johnson the Rest Lake dam tender\, ultimately took over as dam tender and established the Win-Mar with Winne’s life long friend Marie Zimmerman. The Win-Mar 0perated until 1961 when Charlie and Inez Pea took over the property and ran it. Later in the 1970s Decker family took over operations\, and in the 1980s and 90s Judi Schmidt-Arnold and her family owned the Pea Patch. In the late 1990’s Barry and Lisa (LaPorte) Hopkins took over the Pea Patch and continued this amazing cultural legacy.
