On our tour\, learn how local citizens got involved in the liquor trade and were able to supply bootleg alcohol to Chicago and Minneapolis. Hear the story about the kidnapping of Minneapolis mob boss Leon Gleckman and the place the kidnappers hid him. Ralph Capone has a Manitowish Waters story as well. John Dillinger and his gang were not only at Little Bohemia but made themselves known to several families as they were trying to escape the FBI trap. SUMMARY:Camp Mercer Interpretive Trail Hike
DESCRIPTION:Thursday: 1 pm – 4:00 pm \nExplore one of the most robust Civilian Conservation Corps camps in the Northwoods with Manitowish Waters Historical Society historian Jim Bokern and a NLDC naturalist while walking on the newest NHAL hiking trail! With 23 interpretive signs and cleared archaeological features\, years of research will be discussed while traveling along the Manitowish River. We will discover a variety of the Northwoods’ ecologies and the impact of the CCC on protecting natural resources. Importantly\, two earlier river drive era logging camps are also present on the Camp Mercer campus. We have a moderate three-mile trail hike. \nSpace is limited\, so please register early; $30 ($25 for members of the NLDC or MWHS). SUMMARY:MW Historical Society: History of Logging and Railroads in the Northwoods
DESCRIPTION:Join us and discover the rich and unique heritage of WinMan trails from 3-5pm on Saturday July 27th at the WinMan Chalet. \nJim Bokern from the Manitowish Waters Historical Society will be sharing a fascinating conversation regarding the history and importance of logging and railroads in the Northwoods. \nJim will address the unique significance of the land where WinMan currently sits and its impact on those industries. He will take you through 100+ years of logging\, right up to modern day logging operations and the importance it still has on the health and vitality of our forests. \nThen\, to top things off\, we will be tapping a special keg of Camp 660 Beer. Brewed based on a pre-prohibition Schlitz pilsner recipe in honor of Camp Mercer located just a few miles away\, we are sure you will enjoy it. \nThe event is FREE to attend but $10 donations to the MW Historical Society are encouraged. Beers will be sold for $6/pint with $1 from each sale going to the Historical Society. The event is open to the public\, and there is no need to register.

Using tour guide headsets\, participants can easily hear and learn from Manitowish Waters Historical Society (MWHS) and North Lakeland Discovery Center guides. Trail discussions will include geology\, nature\, prehistoric\, Ojibwa culture\, logging\, early resorts\, guides\, Rest Lake Ranger station and more. We will stop into several local establishments for refreshments and amazing stories about our town’s past. The route is 3.5 miles and mostly along existing trails. We will start at Koller Park and follow bike and hiking trails to the Manitowish River and back to Koller Park. \nSpace is limited\, so please register early; $20 ($15 for members of the NLDC or MWHS).
