SUMMARY:History of Rest Lake Dam
DESCRIPTION:Imagine the Manitowish Waters chain of lakes 16.5 feet higher than today’s summer water levels! That was the original plan created by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1878. \nJoin us at 1 p.m. on Wednesday\, May 29st at the MAC and discover how the river drive logging era and Rest Lake Dam became the anchor for Manitowish Waters. Learn about pre-dam conditions along the chain and how logging drives modified the lakes\, streams and shorelines. Today\, Rest Lake Dam has a unique operating order\, which started in 1914 through a grassroots effort to protect riparian property. Over time\, Rest Lake Dam has taken many forms\, and its operations have been legally challenged four times. \nLocal historian Jim Bokern will share new photos\, historic maps\, documents\, research and stories that are guaranteed to deliver new and exciting historic insights and\, perhaps\, a better understanding of how the dam operates today.

SUMMARY:Win-Mar/Pea Patch Centennial
DESCRIPTION:Join the Manitowish Waters Historical Society Zoom presentation and celebrate 100 years of amazing service and fun at the Win-Mar or Pea Patch. Explore the 1888 building of the Rest Lake Dam as well as the Mississippi River Logging Company camp\, which established the first MW commercial operation in 1889.  Learn how Winne Johnson Young\, daughter of Walcott Johnson the Rest Lake dam tender\, ultimately took over as dam tender and established the Win-Mar with Winne’s life long friend Marie Zimmerman. The Win-Mar 0perated until 1961 when Charlie and Inez Pea took over the property and ran it. Later in the 1970s Decker family took over operations\, and in the 1980s and 90s Judi Schmidt-Arnold and her family owned the Pea Patch. In the late 1990’s Barry and Lisa (LaPorte) Hopkins took over the Pea Patch and continued this amazing cultural legacy.
