1930 Film of the Turtle Flambeau Flowage

This amazing video of the Turtle Flambeau Flowage, archived by the State Historical Society demonstrates both the dramatic shift in the ecologies of the river basins and the early controversy regarding the dam.  The video attempted to challenge the merits of the dam and was produced to protest the building of the flowage.  Citizen activism regarding dam operations in Manitowish Waters in the 1910’s, 1930’s and 2000’s parallel some elements of the 1930’s Turtle Flambau Flowage production.  Importantly, the video reveals what the Manitowish chain looked like immediately after the dam was constructed in the late 1880’s.
