Camp Mercer Historical and Interpretive Hike and Taphouse Visit

August 6 @ 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
$25 – $30
Explore with Manitowish Waters Historical Society guide Jim Bokern and a North Lakeland Discovery Center naturalist one of the most robust Civilian Conservation Corps camps in the Northwoods while walking on the newest Northern Highland American Legion State Forest hiking trail! We will follow 23 interpretive signs, visit cleared archaeological features and discuss years of research while traveling along the Manitowish River. Discover a variety of Northwoods ecologies and the impact of the CCC on protecting natural resources. Importantly, two earlier river-drive era logging camps are also present on the Camp Mercer campus. This will be a moderately challenging 2-3 mile hike due to uneven terrain. Following the hike, there is an option to join the team at Liberty Way Taphouse to continue the historic conversation to celebrate Camp Mercer.
Restrooms are available at the meeting location. Registered participants will receive an email with more information prior to the hike. Registration is required by Aug. 4, 2026 at the North Lakeland Discovery Center (https://www.discoverycenter.net/upcoming-programs). For more information, contact the NLDC at 715-543-2085 or email [email protected].
