Camp Mercer Hike and Taphouse
Explore with Manitowish Waters Historical Society guide Jim Bokern and a NLDC naturalist one of the most robust CCC camps in the Northwoods, while walking on the newest Northern Highland American Legion State Forest hiking trail! 23 interpretive signs, cleared archaeological features and years of research will be discussed while traveling along the Manitowish River. Discover a variety of Northwoods ecologies and the impact of the CCC on protecting natural resources. Importantly, two earlier river drive era logging camps are also present on the Camp Mercer campus. This will be a moderately challenging 2-3 mile hike due to uneven terrain. Following the hike there is an option to join the team at Liberty Way Taphouse to continue the historic conversation with historic, specially brewed beer to celebrate Camp Mercer.
Space is limited, so be sure to register early: $30 ($25 for NLDC or MWHS members). Register at the North Lakeland Discovery Center (www.discoverycenter.net). For more information, contact the NLDC at 715-543-2085 or email [email protected]. The hike will begin at the River’s Edge parking lot.
