Shields Magazine: 1890 Journal from Presque Isle to Manitowish Station – published in 1907

A fantastic journal from 1890 that is full of unique details, including the need for stewardship/restraint in fish harvesting; precise travel from Presque Isle to Big Lake; the establishment that the Rest Lake Dam was built by 1890; the nature of the grounds around the Rest Lake Dam; and Ojibwa wild rice harvest on Big Lake.  The entire narrative is filled with extraordinary detail and a good bit of exaggeration.  The most hyperbolic passage is the canoe trip from the Rest Lake Dam to the Manitowish Station through the "...boiling, foaming torrent..." of the Manitowish River. This article is a must read for anyone who has canoed below the Rest Lake Dam.
